We are travelling internationally again! This fall trip is focused on Thailand and Nepal, with layovers on each end in Singapore. We had a great summer at home hiking, learning how to sail on the San Francisco Bay, and enjoying travel to Oregon, Colorado and Michigan. The other major activity was planning this trip. We have roughly 2 months in Nepal bracketed by a few weeks in Thailand on each end. Now that the planning phase is done we can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Note: We do not make any money off this blog, it is for friends and family. Any links in here are in case you may be interested in more details.
Singapore: A Fun Hot and Humid Layover
When we were booking our flights there were no direct routes from the US to Bangkok, so we decided to overnight in Singapore on both ends. On the way here we had about 7 hours to see some sights downtown. It was the normal hot and humid weather so we tried to get the outdoors stuff done early. But the heat is hard to escape. It was Diane’s first visit so we focused on a walk around Marina Bay.
The Merlion
The Merlion (half lion, half fish) is the symbol of Singapore and a place to get a classic shot
There is also a much smaller baby Merlion nearby.
Gardens by the Bay
This stunning park has all sorts of environments to explore. We went to the Floral Fantasy exhibit since it is smaller and has AC.
Marina Bay Sands
This building is an architectural highlight of Singapore. It is on an absolutely massive scale and has a rooftop bar where we relaxed and enjoyed a Singapore Sling. We followed this with lunch at Din Tai Fung in the mall next door. Their xiaolongbao (small Chinese steamed bun) is so yummy!!
The Jewel
Or visit was too short and we had to catch our next flight. We made our last stop at the Jewel located next to the airport. It has the world’s largest indoor waterfall and we enjoyed the view from multiple floors and vantage points. Very impressive.
Onwards
It was a quick stop but is was great to see some of the highlights. Next stop is Koh Samui, Thailand!!
Nice write up Dave! Wish you and Diane a wonderful trip. You didn’t try any durian? You’ll have more opportunities in Thailand. The best is Musang King though if you can find it. I don’t think it’s in season right now though… April-May is the best time I believe. You should swing by Malaysia too if you get some time. The food in Penang is the best in the world
We haven’t tried Durian yet. I saw a few whole ones in the markets, but none on restaurant menus. Maybe our next time in Thailand. And Malaysia?
You’re not going to get any durian in any enclosed buildings 🙂 Only in open air places
Glad you’ve had a good visit so far. Was hoping to touch base before you left but I had a last minute invite from Sean to visit with them in Destin, Florida. Had a great time with the kids on the beach.
Look forward to your next post. Safe travels.
